Why does my home have sparking outlets?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

A brief spark when plugging in a device is normal. However, large sparks, sparks that last more than a second, or sparks when nothing is plugged in indicate a serious problem. Causes include loose wiring, a short circuit, moisture in the outlet, or an overloaded circuit. Turn off the circuit at the breaker immediately and do not use the outlet. Call an electrician to inspect and repair the outlet before using it again.

Why It Matters

Sparking outlets are a major fire hazard. They can ignite nearby materials and cause electrical fires that spread quickly through wall cavities.
