What are GFCI and AFCI outlets and where do I need them?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

GFCI outlets protect against shock by shutting off power when they detect current leakage. They are required in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, basements, and outdoors. AFCI outlets detect dangerous electrical arcing that could cause a fire. They are required in bedrooms, living rooms, and most other living areas.

Why It Matters

These outlets save lives and prevent fires. If your home does not have them in the required locations, install them for safety and code compliance.
