Why does my home have dead outlets?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Dead outlets are usually caused by a tripped GFCI outlet upstream, a tripped circuit breaker, a loose wire connection, or a worn-out outlet. First check if a GFCI outlet in the same room or nearby has tripped and press its reset button. Then check your breaker panel. If the outlet is controlled by a switch, make sure the switch is on. If none of these work, the outlet may need replacement by an electrician.
Why It Matters
Dead outlets are inconvenient, but they can also signal loose wiring connections that create fire risks if left unaddressed.
