Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
A breaker trips when it detects an overload, short circuit, or ground fault. Overloads happen when too many devices run on one circuit. Short circuits occur when a hot wire touches a neutral wire. Ground faults happen when a hot wire touches a ground wire or grounded surface. Frequent tripping means the circuit is overtaxed or there is a wiring problem that needs diagnosis.
Why It Matters
Repeated breaker trips are a safety warning. Ignoring them can lead to overheating and electrical fires. A licensed electrician should investigate persistent issues.
