Why are my outlets warm to the touch?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Warm outlets indicate excessive electrical resistance, which can be caused by loose connections, worn-out receptacles, or an overloaded circuit. A slightly warm outlet during heavy use may be normal, but hot outlets are dangerous. Loose wiring creates arcing and heat that can melt insulation and start fires. Unplug devices and call an electrician immediately if any outlet feels hot.

Why It Matters

Heat is a warning sign of electrical trouble. Hot outlets are a fire risk and should be inspected by a professional before the problem worsens.
