Aluminum wiring expands and contracts more than copper with temperature changes, causing connections to loosen and overheat. This makes aluminum wiring a greater fire hazard, especially at outlets, switches, and junction boxes. Aluminum is also more prone to oxidation, which increases resistance and heat. Homes built between 1965 and 1973 commonly have aluminum wiring. Copper is more conductive, stable, and safer. Aluminum wiring requires special connectors and careful maintenance.
