What is the difference between 15-amp and 20-amp circuits?

A 15-amp circuit can handle up to 1,800 watts of load and uses 14-gauge wire. A 20-amp circuit handles up to 2,400 watts and uses thicker 12-gauge wire. Kitchens, dining rooms, laundry rooms, and bathrooms typically require 20-amp circuits. Bedrooms and living rooms are usually on 15-amp circuits. Using a 20-amp breaker with 14-gauge wire is a fire hazard.

Why It Matters

Mismatching wire gauge and breaker amperage is dangerous. Knowing the difference helps you understand what your circuits can handle without overloading.
