What is a subpanel and when do I need one?

A subpanel is a smaller electrical panel fed from your main panel that distributes power to a specific area, such as a garage, workshop, basement, or addition. You need a subpanel when your main panel has no available breaker slots, or when you want to run power to a detached structure. Subpanels must have their own grounding system and a separate ground rod for detached buildings. An electrician must install the subpanel.
