What is a GFCI outlet and where do I need them?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet detects ground faults and shuts off power in milliseconds to prevent shock. They are required in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, basements, crawl spaces, laundry rooms, and outdoor areas. The National Electrical Code mandates GFCI protection in any area where water and electricity could meet.

Why It Matters

GFCIs save lives. They prevent electrocution by cutting power before a ground fault can cause serious injury, especially in wet or damp locations.
