What is a GFCI breaker vs a GFCI outlet?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
A GFCI breaker installs in your electrical panel and protects the entire circuit. A GFCI outlet protects only the outlets downstream from it. Both detect ground faults and shut off power to prevent shock. A GFCI breaker is better for outdoor circuits, bathrooms, and circuits where you want whole-circuit protection without individual outlets. GFCI outlets are easier to install and reset at the point of use.
Why It Matters
Choosing between a GFCI breaker and outlet depends on your specific needs. A breaker protects the whole circuit, while an outlet is more affordable and convenient for single locations.
