What is a AFCI outlet and where do I need them?

An AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet detects dangerous arcing in your home's wiring and shuts off power to prevent fires. The National Electrical Code requires AFCI protection on most 120-volt circuits in living spaces, including bedrooms, living rooms, family rooms, and hallways. Unlike standard outlets, AFCI outlets have a TEST and RESET button. They are required in new construction and major renovations but are not required in bathrooms or kitchens.

Why It Matters

AFCI protection prevents electrical fires caused by damaged wires, loose connections, and worn insulation. It is a lifesaving safety upgrade for any home.
