How many outlets should each room have?

Modern building codes require outlets every 12 feet along wall space, and no point along a wall should be more than 6 feet from an outlet. Living rooms typically need 7 to 10 outlets, bedrooms 4 to 6, and kitchens need outlets every 4 feet along countertops. Older homes often have fewer outlets, which is one reason they may fail inspection during a home sale.

Why It Matters

Adequate outlets prevent dangerous reliance on extension cords and power strips, which are a leading cause of home electrical fires.
