How do I test my outlets for proper grounding?

Use a plug-in outlet tester, available at any hardware store for $10 to $15. Simply plug it in and read the light pattern to see if the outlet is properly grounded, reversed, or open. Three-prong outlets without proper grounding are dangerous and common in older homes. An electrician can verify with a multimeter and install a grounded outlet or GFCI as a safe alternative.

Why It Matters

Ungrounded outlets increase the risk of electric shock and can damage sensitive electronics. Testing is quick and can identify hidden safety issues.
