How do I know if my wiring is outdated?

Key signs include: knob-and-tube wiring (common before 1940), aluminum wiring (used in the 1960s and 1970s), cloth-covered wiring, two-prong outlets (ungrounded), frequent breaker trips, and flickering lights. If your home is more than 40 years old and has never been rewired, it likely has outdated wiring that cannot safely handle modern electrical loads.

Why It Matters

Outdated wiring is a leading cause of house fires. Homes with old wiring may also have trouble passing inspection when you sell.
