How do I know if my electrical panel needs upgrading?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Signs include: your panel is rated for less than 100 amps (60-amp panels are outdated), you frequently trip breakers, you use many extension cords, your lights dim when appliances run, or your panel uses fuses instead of circuit breakers. An upgrade to 200 amps is standard for modern homes and necessary if you plan to add major appliances or an EV charger.

Why It Matters

An outdated panel cannot safely handle today's electrical demands. Upgrading improves safety, prevents nuisance tripping, and can increase your home's resale value.
