How do I install a smart light switch?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Turn off power at the breaker. Remove the existing switch and confirm power is off with a voltage tester. Most smart switches need a neutral wire in the switch box; older homes may lack one. Connect the line, load, neutral, and ground wires to the smart switch's matching terminals. Mount the switch, restore power, and follow the app setup instructions. If your box lacks a neutral wire, look for a neutral-free smart switch model.
Why It Matters
Smart switches add convenience, scheduling, and voice control, but require proper wiring. A missing neutral wire is the most common installation obstacle.
