How do I install a doorbell transformer?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

The doorbell transformer steps down 120-volt household power to the 16 to 24 volts your doorbell needs. Turn off power at the breaker. Remove the old transformer and disconnect the wires. Mount the new transformer to the junction box. Connect the 120-volt wires (black and white) to the transformer's input, and the low-voltage doorbell wires to the output terminals. Restore power and test the doorbell. If unsure, hire an electrician.

Why It Matters

A faulty transformer can cause your doorbell to stop working or produce a weak chime. Replacing it is a straightforward job for a qualified electrician.
