How do I install a dimmer switch?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Turn off power at the breaker. Remove the existing switch, identify the line and load wires, and connect them to the dimmer's corresponding wires. Most dimmers also need a neutral wire; if your switch box lacks one, you need a neutral-free dimmer. Match the dimmer to your bulb type (LED, incandescent, or halogen) and wattage rating. Test before mounting the plate.
Why It Matters
Dimmers reduce energy usage, extend bulb life, and allow you to adjust room ambiance. Installing a compatible dimmer prevents buzzing and flickering with LED bulbs.
