How do I install a dimmer switch for LED lights?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
LED dimmers differ from standard dimmers. Turn off power at the breaker and remove the old switch. Connect the dimmer wires to the line, load, neutral, and ground wires in the box. Use a dimmer specifically rated for LED bulbs to prevent buzzing, flickering, and reduced dimming range. Check that your LED bulbs are labeled dimmable, as not all are. Set the dimmer's minimum brightness adjustment if it has one for smooth low-end performance.
Why It Matters
Using the wrong dimmer with LED bulbs causes flickering, buzzing, and shortened bulb life. An LED-rated dimmer ensures smooth, quiet dimming from full bright to low.
