How do I install a ceiling fan?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Installing a ceiling fan requires an electrical box rated to support the fan's weight (at least 50 pounds), typically marked 'fan-rated.' Turn off power at the breaker, assemble the fan, mount the bracket, connect the wires (matching colors), and attach the fan. The fan needs its own switch if the room does not already have one. If you are replacing a light fixture, verify the box can handle the fan's weight.

Why It Matters

A ceiling fan that is not properly supported or wired can fall or cause electrical hazards. Using a fan-rated box is critical for safety.
