How do I fix an outlet that doesn't work?

First check if a GFCI outlet has tripped. Press the reset button on any GFCI outlets in the room. Then check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker. If the outlet is controlled by a wall switch, make sure the switch is on. If none of these work, turn off power at the breaker, remove the outlet, and check for loose wires. Tighten any loose connections. If the outlet is old or discolored, replace it with a new one of the same type.

Why It Matters

A non-working outlet is often a simple fix, but loose wires can cause arcing and fire. If you are unsure, call an electrician rather than guessing.
