How do I add recessed lighting?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Recessed lighting requires cutting holes in the ceiling, running wire from an existing circuit or switch, and installing IC-rated housings that can contact insulation. Turn off power at the breaker. Use the housing template to mark and cut holes. Run 14/2 or 12/2 wire between lights and to the switch. Connect the wires, install the housing, attach the trim, and install bulbs. Use LED recessed lights for energy efficiency and minimal depth requirements.
Why It Matters
Recessed lighting provides clean, modern illumination without taking up floor space. Proper spacing and IC-rated housings are critical for safety and appearance.
