How do I add outdoor outlets safely?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Outdoor outlets must be GFCI-protected, weather-resistant, and installed in a weatherproof box with a cover that protects the plug when in use. They should be on a dedicated circuit or one that does not serve sensitive indoor devices. Bury any underground wiring at least 18 inches deep in conduit. Always hire a licensed electrician and pull the required permit.

Why It Matters

Outdoor electricity combines water, weather, and grounding risks. Improper installation can lead to shock, electrocution, or code violations when you sell your home.
