How do I add exterior lighting?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Exterior lighting options include hardwired fixtures on a switch, motion-sensor floodlights, low-voltage landscape lighting, and solar-powered path lights. Hardwired fixtures require weatherproof junction boxes, GFCI protection, and outdoor-rated wiring. Low-voltage systems use a transformer that plugs into a GFCI outlet. Solar lights need no wiring but provide less output. For hardwired installations, hire a licensed electrician.
Why It Matters
Exterior lighting improves security, curb appeal, and functionality. Outdoor electrical work must follow code to prevent shock and weather damage.
