How do I add a 240-volt outlet for appliances?

Adding a 240-volt outlet requires a double-pole breaker, 10 or 6-gauge wire (depending on amperage), and a dedicated circuit. This is not a DIY job for most homeowners. Turn off the main breaker, install the double-pole breaker in the panel, run the correct gauge wire to the outlet location, and connect the two hot wires, neutral, and ground to the receptacle. This work requires a permit and inspection in most jurisdictions.

Why It Matters

240-volt outlets are needed for large appliances like EV chargers, electric ranges, dryers, and workshop equipment. Improper installation is a serious fire and shock hazard.
