When should I mulch my garden beds?

Late spring, after the soil has warmed and annuals are planted, is the best time to apply fresh mulch. A second light application in early fall can help insulate plant roots for winter. Avoid mulching too early in spring when soil is still cold. Maintain a 2- to 3-inch layer, keeping mulch away from plant stems and tree trunks.

Proper mulching conserves moisture, suppresses weeds, moderates soil temperature, and adds a finished look to your garden.
