How do I prevent weeds in my garden?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Apply a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch around plants to block sunlight and prevent weed germination. Pull weeds when they are small before they go to seed. Use landscape fabric in pathways. Plant ground covers to fill bare spaces. Pre-emergent herbicides can help, but hand weeding and mulching are the most effective long-term strategies.

Why It Matters

Weeds compete with your plants for water, nutrients, and sunlight. Prevention is much easier than fighting established weeds.
