When should I plant grass seed in New Jersey?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Early fall, from mid-August through September, is the best time to plant grass seed in New Jersey. The soil is warm, days are mild, and autumn rains help establish roots. Late spring, from April to mid-May, is the second-best window. Avoid summer seeding when heat and drought stress new grass.

Why It Matters

Timing your seeding correctly dramatically improves germination rates and saves you from wasting seed and effort.
