When should I divide perennials in New Jersey?

Spring-blooming perennials should be divided in early fall, from September through October. Summer and fall-blooming perennials are best divided in early spring, just as new growth appears. Divide every 3 to 5 years to rejuvenate plants and control their spread. Water divisions well after replanting and mulch to protect roots.
