What is the best way to prune shrubs?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth starts for most shrubs. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches first. Thin out older stems at ground level to improve air circulation. Shape shrubs by cutting just above outward-facing buds. For flowering shrubs, prune after they bloom to avoid removing next year's flower buds. Use clean, sharp tools for clean cuts.
Why It Matters
Proper pruning keeps shrubs healthy, promotes vigorous growth, and maintains an attractive natural shape without damaging the plant.
