How do I maintain a healthy lawn year-round?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Mow high, leaving grass at 3 to 4 inches to shade roots and retain moisture. Water deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth. Fertilize in spring and fall with a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer. Aerate in the fall to reduce soil compaction. Test your soil pH every few years and adjust as needed.

Why It Matters

A healthy lawn resists weeds, disease, and drought better than a neglected one. Consistent care is easier than fixing problems later.
