Does my insurance cover theft from my car?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Theft of personal items from your car is covered by your homeowner's or renter's insurance, not your auto insurance. Items like laptops, bags, tools, and clothing are subject to your personal property coverage limit minus your deductible. However, auto insurance covers damage to the vehicle itself, including broken windows or locks from a break-in. Your homeowner's policy typically has a sublimit for items stolen from a vehicle, often around $1,500. Valuable items like laptops may have separate sublimits. File a police report and claim with both your auto and homeowner's insurers as appropriate.
Why It Matters
Many homeowners incorrectly assume auto insurance covers items stolen from the car. Knowing which policy applies prevents delays and claim denials.
