Does my insurance cover my detached garage?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Yes, standard homeowner's insurance typically covers detached structures like garages, sheds, and workshops. Coverage is usually set at 10 percent of your dwelling coverage limit. If your home is insured for $400,000, your detached garage would be covered for up to $40,000. This covers damage from the same perils as your main home, such as fire, wind, and theft. If you store expensive items in your garage, such as tools or vehicles, check whether they fall under your personal property coverage limits. You can increase the coverage for detached structures with an endorsement if needed.

Why It Matters

Detached structures are covered but at lower limits than your main home. A fully equipped workshop or a garage full of tools may exceed that limit.
