What should I do if my water main breaks?

Shut off the main water valve to your home immediately to stop the flow and prevent flooding. If the break is in the street or between the street and your house, call your water utility company right away. If the break is inside your home, call a plumber. Turn off electricity to any affected areas if water is near outlets or appliances. Document damage with photos. Remove standing water with pumps or wet/dry vacuums to prevent mold.
