What should I do if my water heater bursts?

Shut off the water supply to the water heater and the main water valve if needed. Turn off the power or gas supply to the water heater. Drain the tank using the drain valve. Remove standing water with a wet vacuum or pump. Call a plumber for replacement. Document damage for insurance if it caused flooding.

Why It Matters

A ruptured water heater can release 40 to 75 gallons of scalding water rapidly, causing severe flooding, burns, and property damage.
