What should I do if my pipe bursts?

Shut off the main water valve immediately. Open faucets to relieve pressure and drain the system. Turn off electricity to affected areas if water is near outlets. Mop up standing water and call a plumber. Document damage with photos for insurance. If the pipe is frozen, never use an open flame to thaw it.
