What should I do if my house floods?

Turn off electricity at the main breaker if it is safe to reach. Do not walk through moving water. Shut off gas if instructed by authorities. Move valuable items to higher floors. Document everything with photos. Call your insurance company. Remove standing water with pumps or wet vacuums. Run dehumidifiers to prevent mold.
Why It Matters
Floodwater often contains sewage, chemicals, and debris. Standing water also weakens drywall, flooring, and structural supports within hours.
