What should I do if my home is damaged by a tornado?

Check yourself and others for injuries and call 911 if anyone is hurt. Do not enter heavily damaged areas, as the structure may be unstable. Turn off natural gas at the meter if you smell gas or hear a hissing sound, but only if it is safe to reach. Watch for downed power lines and standing water that may be electrified. Document all damage with photos and video for insurance. Contact your insurance company to start the claims process. Cover broken windows and roof damage with tarps to prevent further damage.
