What should I do if my home has structural damage?

Evacuate the home immediately if the damage is from an accident, storm, or sudden event. Look for warning signs: sagging ceilings, cracked or bowing walls, doors that stick or will not close, sloping floors, or visible foundation cracks larger than one-quarter inch. Call a structural engineer for an inspection. Do not attempt DIY repairs on structural elements. Contact your insurance company and document all damage with photos before any emergency repairs are started.
