What should I do if my home has asbestos exposure?

Stop all activity in the affected area immediately. Do not disturb asbestos-containing material any further, as disturbed asbestos releases fibers into the air. Close off the area and do not use HVAC systems that could circulate fibers. Call a licensed asbestos abatement professional for testing and removal. Do not attempt to clean or remove asbestos yourself, even with a vacuum, as standard vacuums blow fibers into the air. If you have been exposed, consult your doctor about health monitoring.

Asbestos fibers are carcinogenic when inhaled and can cause mesothelioma and lung cancer. Inhalation risks increase significantly when asbestos-containing materials are disturbed during home renovations or damage.
