What should I do if my home gets hit by lightning?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Check for smoke or fire immediately and call 911 if you see flames or smell burning plastic or wiring. Check your electrical panel for tripped breakers and inspect electronics and appliances for damage. Do not touch electrical outlets or devices that may have been damaged. Call an electrician to inspect your wiring and grounding system.
Why It Matters
A lightning strike can cause hidden damage to your electrical system, start fires inside walls, and destroy sensitive electronics even hours later.
