What should I do if my AC fails during a heat wave?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Close blinds and curtains to block the sun. Use fans to circulate air, but only when you are in the room. Stay hydrated and take cool showers. Avoid using the oven or stove. Check the circuit breaker and air filter before calling an HVAC professional. If the temperature becomes dangerous, consider going to a cooling center.

Why It Matters

Extreme heat is the leading weather-related cause of death in the US. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can develop quickly without air conditioning.
