What should I do if I have a major water leak?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Shut off the main water valve immediately. Turn off electricity to affected areas if water is near outlets or appliances. Mop up standing water and remove wet items. Use a wet/dry vacuum for faster removal. Call a plumber and your insurance company. Run fans and dehumidifiers to dry the area and prevent mold growth.

Why It Matters

A major water leak can cause structural damage, electrical hazards, and mold growth within 24 to 48 hours. Every minute counts.
