How do I respond to an electrical fire?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
If safe, unplug the device or turn off power at the circuit breaker. Never use water on an electrical fire. Use a Class C fire extinguisher or baking soda for small fires. If the fire grows or you cannot reach the breaker, evacuate immediately and call 911. Close doors behind you to contain the fire.
Why It Matters
Water on an electrical fire causes electrocution. Using the wrong extinguisher or method can turn a small fire into a deadly emergency.
