How do I respond to a home invasion?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
If you are home and hear intruders, quietly lock yourself in a room with a phone and call 911. Do not confront the intruder. If you cannot escape safely, hide and stay silent. If you arrive home and suspect someone is inside, do not enter, go to a safe location and call the police. After the incident, document what was taken and call your insurance company. Install security cameras and motion-activated lighting to deter future incidents.
Why It Matters
Your safety is more important than any possession. Confronting an intruder dramatically increases the risk of violence. Property can be replaced, lives cannot.
