How do I respond to a gas leak from my furnace?

Leave the house immediately and take everyone with you. Do not flip any light switches, use electronics, or create any spark. Call 911 from outside your home. Then call your gas company. Do not re-enter until emergency personnel say it is safe. Have your furnace inspected by a licensed HVAC professional before using it again. Install carbon monoxide detectors near sleeping areas, as furnace gas leaks also produce CO.

Why It Matters

A gas leak from your furnace can cause an explosion or carbon monoxide poisoning. Furnace gas leaks often go undetected because the smell can be masked by other odors in a basement or utility room.
