How do I respond to a garage fire?
By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®
Evacuate the house immediately. Close the garage door and any interior doors leading to the garage to slow the fire's spread. Call 911 from outside. Do not attempt to move vehicles if the fire is already large. Keep garage fire extinguishers rated for flammable liquids. Never store gasoline or propane tanks inside the attached garage.
Why It Matters
Garages often contain gasoline, propane, paint thinners, and vehicles, making fires there especially volatile and fast-spreading to the main house.
