How do I handle a major electrical panel failure?

If you see sparks, smoke, or smell burning plastic from your electrical panel, evacuate the home and call 911 immediately. Do not touch the panel or attempt to reset breakers. If the power is out only to your home but neighbors have power, and your main breaker will not reset, call a licensed electrician for emergency service. Turn off the main breaker if safe to do so to prevent surges when power is restored. Have your panel inspected by an electrician before resetting it fully.

Why It Matters

An electrical panel failure can cause an arc flash, fire, or power surge that damages appliances and electronics. Only a licensed electrician should open or service the main panel.
