How do I handle a fallen power line near my home?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Stay at least 35 feet away from the fallen line and anything touching it, including fences, trees, and puddles. Assume it is live and dangerous. Call 911 and your utility company immediately. Do not drive over a downed power line. If the line is on your car, stay inside and wait for help.

Why It Matters

Downed power lines can energize the ground for 35 feet in all directions. Electrocution risk remains even if the wire is not sparking.
