How do I handle a backed-up sewer line?

By Bob Millaway, South Jersey Community Expert & REALTOR®

Stop using all water fixtures immediately. Do not flush toilets or run sinks or showers, as water will back up further. Check the main cleanout pipe in your basement or yard. Call a plumber with sewer line equipment. Do not use chemical drain cleaners on major blockages. Check your homeowner's insurance for sewer backup coverage.

Why It Matters

A backed-up sewer line can cause raw sewage to enter your home, creating health hazards and expensive cleanup costs.
